UC Berkeley Cal Lodge
Through a collaborative planning process, a vision was developed for the future of the Cal Lodge that takes into account its historic legacy and mission to serve, while modernizing it for 21st century demands and desires.
Built in 1939 by the Associated Student Union of UC Berkeley, the lodge has experienced 80 years of student and alumni recreation on Donner Summit. This tired mountain ski lodge required a major transformation to address modernization upgrades, code compliance and contemporary programming support. The facility provides dormitory lodging, dining, recreation and respite in a high Sierra setting with views of the Lake Norden Valley. The site and building have been transformed to accommodate new programming opportunities for four season enjoyment and enhanced user experience. A strong focus on indoor-outdoor recreation has expanded the site and building amenities to improve the sense of place and user recreational options for generations to come.
